FG Pays D’Tigress Players $100,000 Each After Historic Fifth Afrobasket Title
The Federal Government has paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
The National Sports Commission confirmed that the payment was part of the Presidential Reward promised to the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after D’Tigress secured a record fifth consecutive Afrobasket title and seventh overall championship in 2025.
Each official of the team also received the naira equivalent of $50,000 as part of the reward package.
The NSC disclosed that the accounts of the players and officials were credited on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, adding that all the beneficiaries had confirmed receipt of the funds.
The Commission said the latest cash payment had completed all components of the Presidential Rewards promised to the members of D’Tigress.
In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, on Wednesday, the NSC said the Presidential Rewards comprised three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON), and cash payments.
“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a 3-Bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and Naira equivalent of $USD 100,000 to players and $USD 50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the commission stated.
Global Mirror News reports that the Federal Government had earlier fulfilled the housing and national honours components of the reward package.
The players and officials received the title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, as well as their certificates of national honours, in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France.
According to the NSC, the documents were duly signed by President Tinubu.
The commission explained that the cash component was paid following the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
D’Tigress’ achievement at the 2025 Afrobasket further cemented their dominance of women’s basketball on the African continent. Their victory marked their fifth consecutive title and seventh Afrobasket championship overall, making the team one of Nigeria’s most successful sporting sides.
The NSC also provided an update on the Presidential Rewards promised to the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team.
It disclosed that the Super Falcons had already received the title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national honours.
The documents were presented to the Falcons during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026.
The Commission said the cash component of the Falcons’ reward was expected to be paid before their next official engagements.
Like D’Tigress, each Super Falcons player was promised the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official was promised the equivalent of $50,000.
The NSC said the rewards reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian athletes and ensuring that outstanding sporting achievements are appropriately recognised.
“This unprecedented rewards to the players and athletes by the Federal Government of Nigeria is in alignment with the Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR which places athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards top on the priority list,” the statement said.
The Commission commended President Tinubu for his continued support for Nigerian sports, saying his policies had strengthened its reform agenda and efforts to build a sustainable sports economy.
It also expressed appreciation to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for their roles in implementing the Presidential Rewards.
According to the NSC, the cooperation among the relevant government agencies ensured that the rewards were implemented “in record time within the due process requirements.”
The payment brings to an end the Federal Government’s outstanding cash obligation to D’Tigress under the Presidential Reward package, following the earlier presentation of their houses and national honours.
