Falconets Thrash New Caledonia 10-1, Storm Into U-20 World Cup Knockout Stage

Nigeria’s Falconets have secured a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after producing a stunning 10-1 victory over New Caledonia in their final Group F match in Poland on Sunday.

The emphatic victory was exactly what Nigeria needed to keep their campaign alive after a difficult start to the tournament.

The Falconets finished second in Group F with four points from three matches, behind Spain, who topped the group with nine points.

Global Mirror News reports that Nigeria had begun the tournament with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing a goalless draw against China, leaving the team needing a convincing victory in their final group game to boost their chances of progressing.

And the Nigerian girls responded emphatically, dismantling New Caledonia with a 10-goal performance.

Ramotalahi Kareem and substitute Winner David both scored hat-tricks, while Rebecca Adegbemile contributed a brace. Seimeyeha Akekoromowei and Tosin Rafiu also got their names on the scoresheet.

Kareem opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute before Adegbemile doubled Nigeria’s advantage just two minutes later.

The Falconets continued to dominate as Akekoromowei made it 3-0 in the 23rd minute.

Kareem then scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 27th minute as Nigeria went into the half-time break with a commanding 4-0 lead.

Global Mirror News gathered that substitute Winner David, who was introduced at the beginning of the second half, quickly made her impact felt by scoring Nigeria’s fifth goal in the 60th minute.

Kareem completed her hat-trick four minutes later to increase Nigeria’s advantage to 6-0.

Rafiu subsequently added Nigeria’s seventh goal in the 70th minute, before Adegbemile scored her second of the match seven minutes later to make it 8-0.

David then took centre stage in the closing stages, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes to complete her own hat-trick and take Nigeria’s tally to 10 goals.

New Caledonia eventually scored a consolation goal through Joceline Kourevi in the 89th minute, but it did little to change the outcome of a one-sided encounter.

The 10-1 result lifted Nigeria to four points, the same total as China, who also finished with four points after losing 3-1 to Spain.

However, the Falconets advanced ahead of China on goal difference, finishing second behind unbeaten Spain.

The result represents a significant turnaround for Nigeria, who had faced the possibility of an early exit following their defeat to Spain and draw against China.

Global Mirror News reports that the Falconets are now through to the Round of 16, where they will continue their pursuit of a first U-20 Women’s World Cup title.

Nigeria have twice reached the final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, but are yet to lift the trophy.

The 2026 tournament therefore provides another opportunity for the Nigerian side to make history on the global stage.

According to FIFA’s competition format, the top two teams in each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, progress to the knockout rounds.

With the emphatic victory over New Caledonia securing their passage, the Falconets will now turn their attention to the knockout stage and the challenge of facing one of the other qualified teams.

The comprehensive 10-1 victory will also provide the Nigerian team with a major boost in confidence as they prepare for the next phase of the competition.
