Public Outcry Forces Accountability as Command Begins Probe into Alleged Abuse of Young Man in Ikorodu
The Lagos State Police Command has detained four Police Officers and disbanded their tactical team following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing personnel harassing a young man in the Odogunyan Area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The development followed public attention generated by the footage, prompting the Command to investigate the incident, identify the officers involved and initiate disciplinary proceedings.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, ordered the detention of the Officers, who were attached to the Imota Tactical Team operating in Ikorodu, pending further investigations and disciplinary action.
The Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed this on Friday, October 23, 2026, during a briefing at the Police headquarters in Ikeja.
According to her, the Command commenced investigations immediately after receiving the video, which showed individuals allegedly harassing a young man in the Community.
She explained that the investigation established that the individuals involved were personnel attached to the tactical team, leading to their summons before the Commissioner and the subsequent decision to detain them.
Adebisi confirmed that all four Officers were in custody, although only three were presented during the briefing, adding that the fourth Officer was also being held for further enquiries.
The decision to disband the entire tactical team was part of the Command’s response to the incident, while investigations and disciplinary proceedings continue.
The Police spokesperson assured residents that appropriate sanctions would be imposed on any Officer found culpable, stressing that the command would not tolerate misconduct or allow personnel to operate above the law.
The Command also commended members of the community for assisting in identifying the officers, noting that public cooperation helped investigators establish their identities and bring them before the Police authorities.
In a statement accompanying the video shared on the Command’s official social media platform, the Police reiterated that wearing a uniform did not give any officer the right to intimidate, harass or violate the fundamental rights of citizens.
The Command maintained that the Police uniform represents service, trust and responsibility, warning that Officers who abuse that trust would face the consequences if found guilty.
The incident has again drawn attention to the importance of police accountability, respect for citizens’ rights and the need for members of the public to have confidence in law enforcement institutions.
For residents of Odogunyan and other parts of Ikorodu, the investigation will be closely watched as they await clarification on the circumstances surrounding the encounter and the outcome of the disciplinary process.
Adebisi urged Lagos residents to report cases of police misconduct to the command, assuring them that complaints against officers acting contrary to official directives would be addressed.
The four Officers remain in custody as further enquiries and disciplinary proceedings continue. The command has yet to announce the final outcome of the investigation or any sanctions against the officers.
Global Mirror News reports that the case highlights the role of public vigilance and responsible use of social media in bringing alleged misconduct to the attention of relevant authorities, while underscoring the need for investigations to establish the facts and ensure due process.
