Odogbolu LG Trains Staff on Agriculture, Food Security, Wealth Creation

In a move aimed at promoting food security, self-reliance and additional sources of income among its workforce, Odogbolu Local Government has organised an in-house training programme for staff on Agriculture, Food production and Wealth creation.
The training, held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the Secretariat Hall, Odogbolu Local Government, focused on the theme, “Agriculture: Food, Wealth and Challenges.”
The programme was facilitated by the Head of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department, Mr. Biola Akintunde, who took members of staff through practical and manageable ways of engaging in agricultural activities for household consumption and commercial purposes.
During the training, Akintunde explained that agriculture could be practised on a small scale without requiring huge capital, stressing that properly planned agricultural ventures could provide food for families while also generating additional income.
He exposed the participants to basic techniques in the rearing of snails and fish, as well as the cultivation of yam, tomatoes and different varieties of vegetables.
According to him, staff could take advantage of available spaces and resources around them to engage in agricultural activities, particularly those that could be managed alongside their regular employment.
The Agriculture HOD also addressed some of the challenges associated with agricultural production, noting that proper planning, commitment, access to relevant knowledge and effective management were essential to achieving success.
He encouraged members of staff to develop greater interest in agriculture, describing it as not only a means of meeting household food requirements but also an opportunity for wealth creation, self-reliance and economic empowerment.
The practical nature of the training gave participants useful insights into various agricultural opportunities that could be undertaken at different scales, depending on available resources, space and individual interests.
Global Mirror News reports that the initiative also underscores the growing importance of knowledge-sharing and skills development within the Local Government workforce, particularly in areas that can improve household livelihoods and contribute to broader economic development.
The training further demonstrated the commitment of the Odogbolu Local Government to continuous staff development and capacity building, while encouraging employees to acquire practical knowledge that can benefit them both within and outside the workplace.
The programme also highlighted agriculture as an important avenue for addressing food insecurity and strengthening household economic resilience at the grassroots level.
Among those in attendance were the Head of the Agriculture Department, Mr. Biola Akintunde; Director of Finance and Supplies, Mr. Akeeb Adeniyi; Head of General Services and Administration, Mrs. Abimbola Ogunyanwo; Head of Information and Public Relations, Mrs. Titilayo Ayanwale; Acting Director of WES, Mr. Idowu Oluyomi; Representative of the Head of Community Department, Mr. Odumuyiwa Maleek; all Unit Heads and other members of staff.
The training ended with renewed emphasis on the need for staff to translate the knowledge acquired into practical agricultural activities capable of improving food availability, creating additional income and promoting self-sufficiency.
