Daniel Etim Effiong Defends Kissing Scenes, Asks Critics: ‘Would You Question a Gynaecologist?’
Nollywood Actor Daniel Etim Effiong has responded to criticism over his kissing scenes in movies, questioning whether people who condemn such scenes would ask a gynaecologist similar questions about examining female patients as part of his profession.
The Actor made his position known in a video while addressing the debate surrounding actors who engage in intimate scenes on screen.
Effiong argued that the nature of an action alone does not necessarily determine whether it is good or evil, stressing that a person’s intention and the condition of the heart should also be considered when judging an act.
He asked critics to consider whether they would question a Medical Doctor whose profession requires examining women’s reproductive organs.
“Would you ask this same question to a gynaecologist? Do you know who a gynaecologist is? Of course, a guy is a Doctor, a Medical Doctor that saves lives and works with women and looks at the female genitals every day,” he said.
According to the Actor, the same physical act can have different meanings depending on the circumstances and the intention behind it.
Effiong further referenced the Bible in making his argument, saying that what comes from a person’s heart is more important than what is seen externally.
He maintained that a person’s inner intentions can determine whether an action should be regarded as good or evil.
“There’s a condition of a man’s heart that judges what he does, that qualifies what he does, that makes it good or evil. It’s not what you see from the outside; it’s what the man is, the condition of his heart,” he said.
The Actor also noted that even ordinary actions such as looking at someone or shaking hands could potentially be used for wrong purposes, arguing that the intention behind an action can sometimes be more important than the action itself.
Effiong’s comments have added to the ongoing conversation about professional boundaries, morality and the portrayal of intimacy in Nollywood films.
While some viewers consider kissing scenes inappropriate or inconsistent with their personal and religious values, others view them as part of acting and storytelling when performed within the context of a movie.
