“Say No to FBI Office in Nigeria!”, Lagos Area Boys Protest Alleged US Agency Expansion
A group of youths and self-described “area boys” in Lagos State have staged a protest against the reported establishment of an office of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Nigeria.
The protesters, who took to the streets carrying placards, expressed opposition to what they described as increased involvement of the American Law Enforcement Agency in Nigeria.
In a video circulating online and seen by Global Mirror News, one of the protesters repeatedly chanted into a microphone: “Say no to FBI office in Nigeria.”
The demonstrators questioned the rationale behind the alleged move, particularly its implications for Nigerian youths.
One of the protesters, while addressing the gathering, accused the US authorities of allegedly targeting and oppressing Nigerian youths.
He asked: “What have Nigerian youths done to you that you are oppressing them?”
The protester also questioned why the United States would allegedly focus its law-enforcement attention on Nigerian youths when the Country continues to grapple with serious security challenges, including banditry and other forms of violent crime.
He further told the American authorities that Nigerians needed assistance in tackling insecurity rather than what the protesters perceived as excessive attention on young Nigerians.
“If you can’t help us, go back to your Country,” he declared.
The demonstration comes amid heightened public discussions in Nigeria over international law-enforcement cooperation, cybercrime investigations and the activities of foreign security agencies in the country.
The protesters, however, did not provide specific evidence during the demonstration to substantiate their allegations of oppression or explain the precise nature of the reported FBI office they were opposing.
The FBI is the principal federal investigative and domestic intelligence agency of the United States, and it works with law-enforcement authorities in other countries on matters involving transnational crimes, including cybercrime, terrorism, fraud and organised criminal activities.
As of the time of filing this report, Global Mirror News had not independently verified the circumstances surrounding the protest or obtained an official statement from the FBI or relevant Nigerian authorities specifically addressing the protesters’ claims.
The development has nevertheless generated attention online, with the protesters’ emphatic message, “Say no to FBI office in Nigeria”, becoming the central theme of the demonstration.
