Eight Months After Retired Teacher’s Death, Ogun Police Arrest Suspect Over Alleged Murder

Police say a 61-year-old woman was strangled, attacked with machete over alleged ₦3.45m financial dispute; suspect to face prosecution after investigation

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Alhaji Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly known as Oki-Ocean, in connection with the alleged murder of a 61-year-old retired teacher, Mrs Adedotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, whose body was discovered in her residence in Abeokuta eight months ago.

The arrest, which followed months of investigation, has brought renewed attention to the tragic death of the retired educator, who was found dead in the toilet of her home at Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, Abeokuta, on February 28, 2026.

Global Mirror News reports that the suspect was arrested on Monday, October 19, following sustained investigations by detectives attached to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday, October 23, by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.

According to the Police, Oluwaseun was discovered dead a day after reportedly returning from a retirement celebration organised in her honour by her colleagues.

What should have marked a new chapter in the life of a woman who had spent years serving in the education sector instead became a tragedy, as the circumstances surrounding her death triggered investigations to establish what happened at her residence.

The Police said preliminary findings indicated that the retired teacher was allegedly strangled and attacked with a machete during an altercation with the suspect.

Investigations reportedly led to the transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the SCID, where detectives continued efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.

During interrogation, Ayinde reportedly confessed to the killing and linked the incident to financial dealings between him and the deceased.

According to the Police statement, the suspect claimed that he had entrusted ₦3.45 million to Oluwaseun for safekeeping, with an understanding that she would lend him ₦1.5 million to purchase another vehicle.

The Police, however, stressed that detectives were still working to corroborate the suspect’s account and establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged murder.

The precise sequence of events that allegedly led to the fatal confrontation has not been fully established publicly, while the Police have not confirmed whether the money in question has been recovered.

The arrest represents a significant development in the investigation, which has remained unresolved since the retired teacher’s body was discovered in February.

Reacting to the breakthrough, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers involved in the investigation for their persistence, professionalism and commitment.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s determination to investigate serious crimes thoroughly, ensure accountability and bring suspects before the appropriate authorities in accordance with the law.

The Command said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.

It also urged residents to resolve disagreements through lawful means and promptly report suspicious activities or criminal incidents to the police, assuring the public that credible information would be handled professionally.

As investigations continue, the case highlights the devastating consequences that alleged violent confrontations can have on families and communities, while underscoring the importance of a thorough investigation and due process in securing justice for the deceased.

For Oluwaseun’s loved ones, the arrest marks an important step towards establishing the circumstances of her death, although the full facts of the case remain subject to further police investigation and judicial proceedings.
