NFF Crisis Deepens as Ikpeme Takes Over Secretariat as Interim General Secretary
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme as Interim General Secretary, placing him in charge of the Federation’s Secretariat amid a major leadership transition.
Ikpeme’s appointment follows the resignation of key officials of the football governing body, including NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi.
His immediate responsibility is to ensure the smooth running of the NFF secretariat and maintain administrative continuity while the federation undergoes a restructuring process.
In another major development, Dr Ademola Olajire, who previously served as the NFF Director of Media and Communications, has been appointed Interim Deputy General Secretary.
Global Mirror News gathered that the changes come at a critical period for Nigerian football, with the leadership shake-up occurring as preparations had been underway for the NFF Elective Congress.
However, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has suspended all processes connected to the NFF Elective Congress earlier scheduled for September 27.
The suspension means the planned electoral process will no longer proceed according to the previous timetable. A fresh electoral calendar is expected to be developed after comprehensive reforms of the federation have been worked out.
According to the new arrangement, the reforms will be undertaken in consultation with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the two bodies responsible for regulating international and continental football respectively.
The involvement of FIFA and CAF is expected to provide an internationally recognised framework for the restructuring process and the eventual return to a substantive elected leadership of the NFF.
Meanwhile, the transition has also affected the administration of Nigeria’s domestic football leagues.
Administrators overseeing the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) and the Nationwide League One (NLO) have been directed to hand over the management of their respective competitions to their Chief Operating Officers (COOs).
The directive is aimed at preventing disruptions to league activities while the wider leadership changes within the NFF are being addressed.
With Ikpeme now heading the secretariat on an interim basis and Olajire serving as his deputy, the immediate focus is expected to be on maintaining the federation’s day-to-day operations while stakeholders work towards implementing the proposed reforms.
The latest development represents one of the most significant administrative changes in Nigerian football in recent times and is likely to attract close attention from football stakeholders, clubs, players, coaches and supporters across the country.
