Three killed in Lagos clash over N200 transport levy
Three people have been confirmed dead following a violent clash between a tricycle operator and suspected touts, popularly known as Agberos, in the Ikola ayrea of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 27, 2026, reportedly began after suspected area boys allegedly stopped a tricycle rider and demanded a N200 payment.
According to preliminary Police findings, the rider refused to pay the levy, prompting the group to allegedly seize his tricycle.
The development reportedly escalated after the rider returned to the area with some other persons, resulting in a violent confrontation between the two sides.
Three people were reportedly killed during the ensuing violence, while two others sustained injuries and were taken for medical attention.
The confrontation also reportedly led to the burning of some buildings in the area, raising concerns among residents and forcing security Agencies to intensify efforts to restore calm.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said the deceased and injured victims had been taken to the Military Hospital, Yaba, for necessary medical attention and other procedures.
Abimbola said the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, visited the scene alongside the Commander, 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Afolabi Owolabi, to assess the situation and coordinate the security response.
She explained that personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos State Taskforce, Tactical Squad, Police Mobile Force (PMF), Eko Strike Force and the Vehicle and Crime Response Unit (VCRU) had been deployed to the area.
The Police spokesperson said the security operatives were maintaining law and order and preventing further escalation of the violence.
According to the Command, the situation has been brought under control, while an investigation has commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths, injuries and destruction of property.
The Police assured residents that anyone found to have participated in the violence would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Police Command appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information about the incident, warning that misinformation could further inflame tensions.
Residents were also urged to provide credible information to security agencies that could assist investigators in identifying those responsible for the violence.
The Command said security personnel would continue to monitor the area to ensure that normalcy is fully restored and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
