India Tightens Immigration Net, Nigerians Overstaying Visas Face Deportation

India has intensified its enforcement of immigration laws, with Nigerian Nationals among foreign Nationals coming under increased scrutiny over expired visas and irregular immigration status.

The latest development has raised concerns among Nigerians living, studying, working or seeking medical treatment in India, particularly those whose immigration documents may have expired or whose stay has exceeded the period authorised by Indian authorities.

Global Mirror News gathered that Indian authorities have recently stepped up verification exercises targeting foreign nationals suspected of violating immigration regulations. The intensified checks have already resulted in the detention of Nigerians found allegedly staying in the country after their visas expired.

In the latest cases, Delhi Police apprehended two Nigerian Nationals, including a woman, during Operation VISTA 1.0, a special verification exercise aimed at identifying foreign Nationals residing in the Capital and checking their passports, visas and immigration records.

According to reports, one of the Nigerians, identified as Nwakor Paul Chukwuebuka, was apprehended in Dwarka on August 7 after Police verification reportedly established that his visa had expired.

In a separate operation on August 10, another Nigerian National, identified as Aminat Aminu, was also apprehended in Dwarka for allegedly remaining in India after the expiration of her visa.

Both cases were subsequently referred to the relevant authorities, with deportation or repatriation proceedings initiated.

The development comes amid a broader enforcement drive by Indian authorities against foreigners who are allegedly residing in the Country without valid immigration documentation.

Nationwide immigration checks intensify

The crackdown is not limited to Nigerians. Indian Police have been conducting verification exercises involving foreign nationals in different parts of the Country.

In Bengaluru, authorities recently detained 116 foreign Nationals suspected of staying without valid documentation. Police said the exercise was not directed at any particular Nationality and that the immigration status of each individual would be established through examination of passports, visas and other relevant documents.

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office, known as the FRRO, is also involved in the verification and deportation process for foreigners found to be in breach of Indian immigration requirements.

Indian authorities have long maintained that detection and deportation of foreigners who overstay their authorised period is a continuing immigration responsibility. Under Indian immigration law, authorities can take action against foreign nationals who remain in the Country illegally, although individual cases may be considered differently depending on the circumstances surrounding the overstay.

Nigerians face renewed scrutiny

The latest actions involving Nigerians have attracted particular attention because of a series of immigration and law-enforcement cases involving Nigerian nationals in India.

Earlier in August, a Nigerian national was among two foreign nationals detained in Delhi after authorities allegedly found that they had overstayed their visas. The individuals were taken through the required administrative process and subsequently sent to a detention facility pending further action.

Separately, Indian authorities have linked some recent drug-trafficking investigations to foreign nationals allegedly staying illegally in the Country. In one major investigation reported this month, four Nigerians were arrested and narcotics worth about ₹15 crore were seized. One of the suspects was reportedly found to have remained in India long after the expiration of his medical visa.

However, it is important to distinguish between immigration violations and criminal allegations. A visa overstay does not, by itself, establish involvement in criminal activity, and each case is subject to the relevant investigation and legal process.

Authorities intensify documentation checks

The enforcement campaign means Nigerians currently in India are likely to face greater scrutiny of their immigration documents.

Foreign nationals are generally required to maintain valid passports and visas and comply with the conditions attached to their permission to remain in India. The official Indian visa portal states that foreign Nationals entering India must possess a valid passport and appropriate Indian visa or eligible e-Visa.

Those whose visas have expired may face detention, penalties, deportation proceedings and possible restrictions on future entry, depending on the circumstances and decisions of the competent authorities.

The Indian Government has, however, previously provided temporary relief in exceptional circumstances. In March 2026, authorities announced visa extensions and waiver of overstay penalties for certain foreigners who became stranded in India because of disruptions linked to developments in West Asia. The concessions were subject to specific conditions and case-by-case consideration by the relevant FRROs.

Possible wider enforcement campaign

The intensified scrutiny also comes as Indian security and immigration agencies prepare broader efforts to identify foreigners who may be overstaying their visas.

Reports indicate that the Narcotics Control Bureau, working with State Police and immigration authorities, plans a nationwide campaign known as “Trinetra” to identify foreign Nationals who are illegally overstaying in India, particularly in cases linked to suspected drug trafficking. The reported campaign is expected to involve coordinated checks of immigration status and documentation.

For Nigerians residing in India, immigration lawyers and Community leaders are expected to emphasise the importance of keeping passports, visas, residence permissions and other immigration documents up to date.

Those whose visas are approaching expiration are advised to seek clarification from the appropriate Indian immigration authorities rather than assuming that continued residence will be tolerated.

Nigerians urged to comply with Indian immigration laws

The latest developments serve as a reminder to Nigerians travelling or residing abroad that immigration laws differ from country to Country and that visa conditions must be strictly observed.

While the current enforcement activities have generated headlines because of the number of Nigerians involved in some cases, available reports indicate that the Indian operations are broader than one nationality and are focused on identifying foreigners whose immigration status requires verification.

Global Mirror News reports that Nigerians in India should therefore exercise caution, regularly verify the validity of their immigration documents and promptly address any visa or residence-status issue with the relevant Indian authorities.

The enforcement drive also underscores the potential consequences of overstaying abroad, including detention, deportation, financial penalties and difficulties obtaining future visas.
