Liberia Charges Former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor Over $317m Cocaine Investigation

Liberian authorities have formally charged former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor with drug trafficking, money laundering and several other offences as part of an investigation into an alleged transnational narcotics network, in a development that has sent shockwaves through the country’s political and security circles.

The charges followed the seizure of cocaine estimated to be worth about US$317 million, reportedly one of the largest drug seizures in Liberia’s history. Authorities say the narcotics were destined for Europe, highlighting growing concerns over West Africa’s role as a major transit corridor for international cocaine trafficking.

Global Mirror News gathered that Howard-Taylor, 63, who served as Liberia’s Vice President between 2018 and 2024 under former President George Weah, was reportedly apprehended at Roberts International Airport while attempting to leave the country.

According to authorities, she was taken into Police custody and is awaiting further legal proceedings. Her lawyer has confirmed her detention, while the investigation continues.

Former Vice President Caught in Expanding Drug Probe

The allegations against Howard-Taylor are extensive. Apart from drug trafficking and money laundering, investigators have reportedly accused her of offences including the unlicensed importation, sale and transportation of controlled substances, criminal solicitation, facilitation and conspiracy.

Liberian authorities have also charged three foreign nationals in connection with the wider investigation. The suspects include two Croatian nationals and one Ukrainian, who were reportedly charged in absentia as authorities seek their arrest through international and domestic channels.

The development has elevated the country’s anti-narcotics campaign into a politically sensitive matter, given Howard-Taylor’s former position as the nation’s second-highest political office holder.

$317m Cocaine Seizure Raises Fresh Questions

The case is linked to a major cocaine seizure that reportedly involved almost four tonnes of cocaine. The shipment was allegedly intended for European markets, according to reports on the investigation.

The enormous value of the seized narcotics has intensified scrutiny of Liberia’s vulnerability to international drug-trafficking networks and the ability of organised criminal groups to exploit West Africa as a transit route between South America and Europe.

Authorities have maintained that the investigation is being conducted as a criminal matter and that political considerations should not interfere with the process.

Political Tension Mounts

The arrest and charges have already triggered political reactions in Liberia, with opposition figures questioning the circumstances surrounding Howard-Taylor’s detention.

Former Liberian President George Weah has reportedly described the allegations as politically motivated and accused the government of President Joseph Boakai of targeting former officials. Supporters of Howard-Taylor have similarly raised concerns about what they perceive as selective application of the law.

Global Mirror News learnt that the governing Unity Party, however, has backed the Country’s joint security institutions and their handling of the investigation, insisting on the importance of allowing the law-enforcement process to take its course.

Who Is Jewel Howard-Taylor?

Jewel Howard-Taylor is a prominent Liberian politician who made history as the country’s first female Vice President, serving under George Weah from 2018 until 2024.

Before becoming Vice President, she represented Bong County in the Liberian Senate from 2006 to 2018. She was also formerly married to Charles Taylor, Liberia’s former president, who was convicted by the Special Court for Sierra Leone of aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Sierra Leone’s civil war.

Her political career has therefore placed her among Liberia’s most recognisable political figures, making the current narcotics investigation particularly significant.

Authorities Promise No Political Immunity

Liberian officials have stressed that the investigation will not be halted because of the political status of any individual involved.

The Government has pledged to pursue the case according to due process, while investigators continue working to establish the full structure of the alleged international narcotics network.

The case is also attracting wider regional attention because West Africa has increasingly become an important transit zone for cocaine shipments moving from Latin America towards Europe.

For Liberia, the involvement of a former vice president in such a high-profile investigation represents an extraordinary challenge to the country’s political establishment and its ongoing campaign against organised crime.

As proceedings advance, attention will now focus on the evidence authorities will present in court and whether the allegations against Howard-Taylor can ultimately be substantiated.

Global Mirror News will continue to monitor developments as the Liberian authorities’ investigation and legal proceedings unfold.
