Historic Breakthrough: Nigeria’s Women’s Beach Volleyball Team Books First-Ever Olympic Ticket for Los Angeles 2028
Nigeria has achieved a historic breakthrough in beach volleyball, as the Country’s women’s team secured qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States, for the first time in the nation’s history.
The Nigerian women’s beach volleyball team sealed the historic ticket after defeating Morocco 2–0 in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship held in Alexandria, Egypt, on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The victory not only earned Nigeria the championship gold medal but also confirmed the Country’s place on the Olympic stage in the women’s beach volleyball event at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
Nigeria produced a commanding performance in the final, taking the first set 21–17 before completing the victory with an emphatic 21–10 win in the second set. The dominant display underlined the team’s superiority and capped an impressive campaign in Egypt.
The qualification was particularly significant given Nigeria’s previous attempts to reach the final of the continental championship. Before this year’s triumph, the Nigerian team had reached the championship final on three occasions but finished as runners-up each time.
The team’s journey to the 2026 final also demonstrated its consistency and determination. In the semi-final, Nigeria defeated Mozambique 2–0, winning both sets by identical scores of 21–17 and 21–17 to set up the decisive clash with Morocco.
With the final victory, Nigeria finally converted its repeated continental success into a historic Olympic qualification, bringing an end to years of near misses and second-place finishes.
Reacting to the achievement, the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Musa Nimrod, congratulated the players and described the qualification as a major milestone for Nigerian sports.
Nimrod expressed gratitude for the breakthrough and noted that the achievement came after Nigeria had reached the championship final three times without winning the title.
«“I wish to congratulate Nigerians and thank God. This is the fourth time we are going into the finals; we finished in second place on three occasions,” Nimrod said.»
According to him, the team’s fourth appearance in the final finally produced the desired result, with Nigeria securing both the continental crown and an Olympic berth.
«“God has done it for us on our fourth trial and given us victory. It is not the Nigeria Volleyball Federation’s success alone but the entire nation,” he added.»
The triumph means Nigeria will now begin preparations for its historic appearance at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, where the women’s beach volleyball team will carry the Country’s colours and represent Africa on one of the biggest sporting stages in the world.
For Nigerian volleyball, the achievement represents more than a championship victory. It is a landmark moment that could further raise the profile of beach volleyball in the Country, inspire a new generation of players and strengthen Nigeria’s presence in International volleyball.
