Three Women Die, 10 Injured as Vehicle Plunges From Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Bridge
Three women have been killed while 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries after a vehicle plunged from the Long Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and landed in a ditch.
The fatal crash occurred at about 5:24pm on Friday, September 4, 2026, near Mikano on the Long Bridge, inward Lagos, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE).
The Agency’s spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed the incident in a statement, explaining that three vehicles were involved in the crash.
The vehicles were identified as a white Toyota bus with registration number KJA 247 YM, a white Toyota Corolla marked BDG 867 HG, and a white Mazda bus with registration number AGL 891 XX.
According to TRACE, a total of 16 people,12 males and four females were involved in the accident. Ten people, comprising nine males and one female, sustained injuries, while three female adults died.
Akinbiyi said preliminary accounts from eyewitnesses pointed to excessive speeding and loss of control as the likely cause of the crash.
“16 people were involved. 10 people were injured and three female adults died.
“According to eyewitness accounts, excessive speeding and loss of control caused the vehicle to somersault into the ditch,” he stated.
Global Mirror News gathered that emergency responders quickly mobilised to the scene following the crash, with personnel from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the police and the Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Service taking part in the rescue operation.
Six of the injured passengers were reportedly evacuated by the Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Service to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Service for treatment.
Akinbiyi added that one injured victim and another person who was presumed dead were taken away from the scene by an FRSC ambulance.
“Six injured passengers had been rescued to Lagos State Accident and Emergency Service by Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Service, while one injured and a presumed dead had been taken away by FRSC ambulance,” he said.
The bodies of two of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital, Ifo, morgue, while another victim who was presumed dead was deposited at the Idera Hospital morgue in Sagamu.
Other injured victims were reportedly taken to A.Z. Hospital by the FRSC for medical attention.
The vehicle that plunged into the ditch was subsequently recovered by the emergency teams and moved to the Warewa Police Station, alongside the other vehicles involved in the crash, for further investigation.
The accident temporarily affected traffic flow along the busy expressway as rescue and evacuation operations were underway. TRACE, however, said normal traffic movement was restored after the operation was completed.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the frequency of serious crashes along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of the busiest highways linking Lagos with Ogun and other parts of the country.
Global Mirror News recalls that another deadly multiple-vehicle crash occurred around the Kara area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on August 25, 2026, leaving seven people dead and two others injured.
The earlier crash, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, occurred at about 12:03am and involved a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.
Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists using the expressway to observe speed limits, maintain proper control of their vehicles and exercise greater caution, particularly along busy sections and bridges where loss of control can have fatal consequences.
