Police Arrest Five Over Murder of Community Leader, Reveal Use of Veterinary Sedative
The Nigeria Police Force has arrested five suspects over the alleged murder of Emmanuel Nwanneniya, a Former Chairman and land agent of Ikem Nando Community in Anambra State, following an investigation into a prolonged dispute over proceeds from community land sales.
The suspects were arrested by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad (STS) on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, as detectives intensified efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death of the Community leader.
The Force, in a statement issued on Monday, August 3, 2026, said preliminary investigations had revealed disturbing details about the alleged crime, including the reported use of S.P.L. Ketamine Hydrochloride 500mg/10ml, described by the Police as a restricted veterinary sedative.
According to the Police, investigators found evidence suggesting that the substance was procured and allegedly used to incapacitate Nwanneniya before he was killed.
Land Proceeds Dispute at Centre of Investigation
The Police said the investigation had uncovered evidence pointing to a wider conspiracy allegedly connected to a lingering disagreement over the management of money generated from the sale of community land.
According to investigators, proceeds from the land sales were shared among the three clans that make up Ikem Nando community, with one of the clans reportedly receiving about N39 million.
Following the distribution, the Community allegedly reached a majority decision that the money should be invested in the construction of a community hall and other development projects intended to benefit residents.
However, the decision reportedly generated opposition from another faction, resulting in prolonged disagreements, hostility and alleged threats against individuals who supported the development plan.
The Force said the dispute subsequently became increasingly contentious, with several respected members of the community allegedly subjected to intimidation.
It added that reports of kidnapping threats against elders and community leaders had previously been brought to the attention of the Police.
According to the Police, some of the persons allegedly involved in the dispute were invited for questioning and their statements obtained before they were released.
However, investigators alleged that the intervention did not end the hostility, which allegedly intensified and eventually culminated in the murder of Nwanneniya.
How Nwanneniya Was Allegedly Lured
The Police alleged that the suspects lured the deceased to a location under the pretext of discussing the purchase of a large expanse of land.
Nwanneniya reportedly accepted the invitation believing he was going to meet genuine prospective buyers.
Investigators alleged that upon arriving at the meeting point, he was overpowered at gunpoint, restrained and injected several times with the restricted sedative.
The Police further alleged that the victim was forced to surrender access to his mobile phone and banking applications.
The investigation reportedly received a major breakthrough from the victim’s wife.
According to the Force, she had informed detectives that her husband left home to inspect land with prospective buyers.
When he failed to return and could no longer be reached by telephone, she reportedly drove to the agreed meeting point, where she allegedly found him lying motionless.
Police said her statement, combined with digital evidence and intelligence analysis, helped detectives trace the suspects and advance the investigation.
Community Leaders Raise Fresh Concerns
During the parade of the suspects in Abuja, members of the Ikem Nando community reportedly alleged that the killing was preceded by months of threats and intimidation.
A community leader, Chief Ejimofor, told journalists that he had repeatedly received threats of abduction because of his support for the decision to channel proceeds from community land sales into development projects.
He described Nwanneniya’s alleged murder as a devastating incident that had left members of the community living in fear.
The Community Youth Leader, Ikechukwu Onagor, also called on the Police to investigate the death of his brother, which he alleged could be connected to the same land dispute.
The Police, however, clarified that the separate death remains under active investigation and that no conclusion has been reached regarding its circumstances or possible connection with Nwanneniya’s case.
Police Question Access to Restricted Veterinary Drug
Speaking during the parade, the Coordinator of the Special Tactical Squad, ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, described the operation as another success recorded through intelligence-led policing.
He commended the operatives for what he described as professionalism in handling the investigation and acknowledged the support of the Inspector-General of Police in facilitating the operation.
Godfrey, however, expressed concern over the alleged ease with which the restricted veterinary sedative was obtained and subsequently used in the suspected crime.
He urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), alongside other relevant regulatory agencies, to strengthen monitoring and control measures surrounding restricted substances.
According to him, stronger regulatory oversight is necessary to prevent controlled substances from being diverted into criminal activities.
Police Promise Further Arrests
The Nigeria Police Force said investigations into the alleged murder and the wider conspiracy remain ongoing.
The Force assured the public that all individuals found to have played roles in the alleged crime would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
It added that although investigators had uncovered substantial evidence, the five suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The case has also renewed concerns about the consequences of prolonged disputes over community land, financial proceeds and development projects, particularly where disagreements degenerate into threats, intimidation and violence.
The alleged use of a restricted veterinary sedative in the crime has equally raised questions about the control and monitoring of substances that could potentially be diverted for criminal purposes.
