Naked Man Survives 278-Foot Leap From Brooklyn Bridge, Faces Multiple Charges
A dramatic scene unfolded in New York City on Sunday August 2, 2026, after a 44-year-old man reportedly climbed to the top of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, stripped naked, displayed a Kazakhstan flag and plunged into the East River from a height of about 278 feet.
Remarkably, the man survived the potentially fatal fall and was rescued from the water by Officers of the New York Police Department (NYPD) Harbor Unit.
The extraordinary incident, which was witnessed by several members of the public and captured on video, has since attracted widespread attention after footage of the dramatic jump circulated on social media.
Man Climbs Brooklyn Bridge Tower
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 2, 2026, when the man, identified by Police as Galymzhan Abaildayev, reportedly climbed to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge’s North tower on the Manhattan side.
According to Police sources, Abaildayev reached the upper section of the bridge at about 2:30 p.m., where he reportedly removed his clothes and placed a Kazakhstan flag on the structure.
Another item carrying writing was also reportedly displayed at the scene, although the significance of the material was not immediately clear.
His unusual behaviour attracted attention from people in the area and prompted an emergency response from the NYPD.
Police Officers Tried to Talk Him Down
Officers from the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU) were dispatched to the bridge and climbed the tower in an attempt to safely bring the man down.
Police Officers reportedly spent time communicating with Abaildayev and trying to persuade him to abandon his position and descend from the bridge.
However, the tense standoff suddenly escalated when the man jumped from the tower into the East River while Officers were still attempting to convince him to come down.
The Brooklyn Bridge’s towers rise roughly 278 feet above the water, making the leap extremely dangerous.
Video recorded by witnesses shows the shocking moment the man plunged from the bridge. In the footage circulated online, he appears to be holding an item as he falls towards the river.
Harbor Police Rescue Him From East River
The NYPD Harbor Unit, which was already operating in the area, immediately responded after the man entered the water.
Officers managed to locate and pull him from the East River before emergency personnel took him to hospital for further assessment.
In what authorities described as an extraordinary survival, the man reportedly escaped the fall without apparent serious physical injuries.
He was subsequently taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue for psychiatric evaluation.
The survival of such a high fall into the river has drawn considerable public attention, given the potentially catastrophic consequences of jumping from such a height.
Police Identify Man, File Charges
Following further investigation, Police identified the man as Galymzhan Abaildayev, a Brooklyn resident.
Authorities subsequently announced several charges against him in connection with the incident.
The charges reportedly include reckless endangerment, public lewdness, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and making graffiti.
Police are also examining the circumstances surrounding his climb onto the bridge and the materials and flags he reportedly placed at the top.
The charges mean that the incident has moved beyond a dramatic rescue operation and into a criminal investigation, although the allegations remain subject to due legal process.
