Two Frankfurt Airport Workers Die in Rare Malaria Outbreak Linked to Mosquitoes

Two workers at Frankfurt Airport in Germany have died from malaria following a rare outbreak that has infected six employees at the Country’s busiest Airport, raising concerns that malaria-carrying mosquitoes may have entered Germany aboard an aircraft.
The outbreak, first detected in July, has prompted an investigation by German health authorities, who are working to determine how the infected mosquitoes reached the Airport and whether the cases are connected to a common source.
According to information gathered by Global Mirror News, the six affected workers are all men who worked in different roles and sections of Frankfurt Airport. Authorities are currently analysing blood samples and conducting laboratory investigations to establish whether the infections were caused by a single mosquito or by several infected mosquitoes.
A spokesperson for Airport operator Fraport confirmed that one employee had died from malaria, while Frankfurt’s public health authorities subsequently confirmed that a second affected worker had also died.
The deaths have intensified scrutiny of the unusual outbreak because none of the affected workers reportedly had a recent travel history to malaria-endemic Countries.
Mosquitoes Suspected of Arriving by Aircraft
German health officials believe the most likely explanation is that infected mosquitoes were transported into the Country aboard an aircraft from a region where malaria is endemic.
Mosquito traps have consequently been installed at various locations around Frankfurt Airport. The insects captured are being sent to laboratories, where specialists will determine their species and investigate their possible geographical origin.
Fraport said it had provided employees with detailed information about the outbreak and urged workers who develop symptoms associated with malaria to seek medical attention promptly.
The Frankfurt Public Health Department is leading the investigation, while laboratory tests aimed at identifying the precise source of the infections are expected to take several weeks.
Risk to the Public Considered Extremely Low
Despite the deaths and the unusual circumstances surrounding the outbreak, health officials have stressed that the risk to the wider population of Frankfurt remains extremely low.
Authorities explained that malaria is not transmitted directly from one person to another under ordinary circumstances. Instead, it is caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes.
Public Health officials have therefore said the current investigation is primarily focused on identifying potentially infected mosquitoes at the airport and preventing further transmission.
The outbreak was initially reported in July, when four Airport workers were known to have contracted malaria. Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported that the four employees became ill between July 4 and 6 and had no recent travel history.
That absence of travel history was considered significant because malaria cases recorded in Germany are normally associated with people returning from Countries where the disease is widespread.
The RKI described malaria transmission within a German airport as extremely rare and warned that the unusual circumstances could potentially lead to delayed diagnosis.
Delayed Diagnosis Could Increase Health Risks
According to the institute, the absence of a recent travel history can make Doctors less likely to immediately suspect malaria when patients present with symptoms.
Such delays can be dangerous because malaria, particularly infections caused by certain parasite species, can progress rapidly and become life-threatening if treatment is not started promptly.
The RKI also noted that the last recorded case of malaria believed to have been transmitted at a German airport occurred at Frankfurt Airport in 2023.
The latest outbreak has therefore renewed attention on the possibility of so-called airport malaria, in which infected mosquitoes are unintentionally transported by aircraft from malaria-endemic regions into Countries where the disease is not normally transmitted.
What Is Malaria?
Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is predominantly found in tropical and subtropical regions, including large parts of Africa.
The disease can initially produce symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, weakness and body aches. In severe cases, malaria can lead to complications affecting the brain, kidneys and other organs and may result in death without prompt treatment.
The World Health Organization says malaria is both preventable and curable, with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment playing a critical role in reducing severe disease and fatalities.
For Frankfurt residents, German health authorities continue to maintain that the current risk remains extremely low. However, investigations at the airport are continuing as specialists work to identify the mosquito species involved, determine where they originated and establish whether they are responsible for the infections among the six workers.
