Oyo Government Arrests Five Suspected Terrorists After Igbeti Military Camp Attack
Oyo State Government has announced the arrest of five suspected terrorists following an attack on a military camp on the outskirts of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects were reportedly arrested wearing military uniforms after the attackers stormed the military camp during an incident that also resulted in damage to some facilities.
The state Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, disclosed the arrests on Monday during a visit to Igbeti, where he inspected the scene of the attack.
Lawal was conducted around the affected area by the Commanding Officer of the 81 Battalion, Lt. Col. Innocent Asogwa.
According to a statement issued by the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the deputy governor said security agencies were expecting to make more arrests as operations continued.
Lawal disclosed that the military had deployed at least 120 soldiers into the surrounding bush in an effort to track down other suspected attackers believed to be involved in the assault.
The attack also reportedly caused a fire at the military camp, damaging an Operation Burst vehicle and some structures within the premises.
The deputy governor explained that grenade launchers allegedly used by the attackers ignited cooking gas cylinders at the camp, leading to the fire and subsequent damage.
Meanwhile, Lawal said the state government’s newly acquired surveillance aircraft remained available for security operations and reconnaissance missions.
He explained that although the aircraft conducts regular surveillance exercises, it cannot remain permanently airborne. He assured residents that it would be deployed whenever its services were required for security operations.
Global Mirror News gathered that the latest security measures are coming amid heightened efforts by the Oyo State Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protect communities, particularly in the Oke-Ogun axis.
As part of the response, Lawal announced the establishment of an emergency committee involving five local government areas adjoining the affected area.
The committee comprises Olorunsogo, Oriire, Saki East, Orelope and Irepo Local Government Areas.
According to the deputy governor, the committee would immediately provide necessary support to security personnel operating within the affected areas and maintain communication with the state government to ensure that assistance reaches security teams promptly.
Lawal assured residents of Igbeti and the wider Oke-Ogun area that the state government remained committed to protecting lives and property.
He called for continued cooperation with security agencies as efforts continued to locate other individuals suspected of participating in the attack.
The development comes as security agencies intensify operations in the area following the assault on the military camp and the reported movement of suspected attackers through surrounding bush paths.
