OAU Final-Year Student Found Dead in Off-Campus Residence, Police Launch Investigation

A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been found dead at his off-campus residence in Osun State, with the Nigeria Police Force commencing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased was identified as Oluwole Oluwasegun, a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Tuesday, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Olarewaju Abiodun, said the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, September 15, 2026, at the student’s hostel located around the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.

According to the statement, the University management received the report in the afternoon and immediately activated its emergency and security response protocols.

Members of the University’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team were dispatched to the scene, while officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, were also contacted and joined the university security personnel at the location.

The student was subsequently evacuated to the University Health Centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.

The management said it is deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding the death and has handed over relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for further investigation.

“The Nigeria Police has commenced investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the university stated.

Global Mirror News gathered that the Student Affairs Division has been notified to provide necessary follow-up and psychosocial support for students affected by the tragic incident, particularly the deceased’s classmates and friends.

The development has thrown the university community into mourning, especially as the deceased was in his final year of study.

As of press time, neither the university nor the police has disclosed the cause of death, and no arrest has been made in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, has commiserated with the family, friends, classmates and colleagues of the deceased.

Bamire reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of staff and students, urging students battling emotional distress, financial pressures, relationship difficulties or other personal challenges to seek help through the university’s counselling and support structures.

“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” the Vice-Chancellor added.

The Police investigation is ongoing, with further details expected in due course.
