Man United Blow 2-0 Lead, Suffer Historic Carabao Cup Collapse Against Brighton
Manchester United suffered a dramatic and historic Carabao Cup exit on Wednesday night after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.

Brighton’s persistence eventually paid off in first-half stoppage time.
Charalampos Kostoulas found space behind the United defence and beat goalkeeper Karl Darlow to pull one goal back for the visitors.
The goal gave Brighton renewed confidence and ensured United went into the break with only a 2-1 advantage instead of the commanding two-goal cushion they had established earlier.
United struggled to regain the control they had shown during the opening stages after the restart.
Despite having more of the ball at different stages, they failed to create enough clear opportunities, while Brighton became increasingly dangerous.
Brighton complete stunning comeback
The equaliser arrived in the 65th minute.
Brighton captain Pascal Groß found the net from close range to make it 2-2 and put the visitors firmly back in contention.
Just four minutes later, Brighton completed the turnaround.
Substitute Maxim De Cuyper finished a quick attacking move to put the Seagulls 3-2 ahead, sending shockwaves around Old Trafford.
The turnaround was particularly striking because Brighton had made six changes to their starting line-up for the cup tie, yet they were able to recover from conceding twice inside the first 10 minutes.
United fail to rescue the game
With Manchester United facing elimination, Carrick turned to his experienced players.
Bruno Fernandes was introduced from the bench, while Matheus Cunha was also brought on as United attempted to find an equaliser.
The changes failed to produce the desired result.
United eventually created a major opportunity when Marcus Rashford found himself with a chance to make it 3-3, but he was unable to beat Steele.
Brighton survived the late pressure and held on for a memorable 3-2 victory.
The defeat means Manchester United have been eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle for the second consecutive season.
Another setback for Carrick
The latest defeat adds to a difficult start to Carrick’s tenure.
Manchester United have taken only four points from their opening four Premier League matches and are currently 13th in the table, according to Reuters. The club had also just suffered defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League before the Brighton collapse.
Carrick accepted responsibility for his team’s poor second-half performance after the match, as United failed to protect a lead that had looked virtually unassailable during the opening 10 minutes.
The defeat also means United’s hopes of winning the Carabao Cup have disappeared before the fourth round, leaving the club with fewer opportunities for silverware this season.

Brighton had previously defeated United at the stadium in the FA Cup in January, making Wednesday’s victory another significant cup triumph for the visitors.
