Nollywood Mourns Again as Actress Atinuke Kareem Dies After Breast Cancer Battle
The Nigerian film industry has once again been thrown into mourning following the death of Yoruba Nollywood actress, Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, popularly known as Atinuke Kareem, after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.
The Actress’ death was announced on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, by Owolabi Ajasa, the Governor of the Ogun State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN).
Global Mirror News gathered that Kareem had been receiving treatment for breast cancer before her death and had, in the months leading to her passing, appealed to members of the public for financial assistance to enable her continue her medical treatment.
Ajasa announced the Actress’ death in a statement shared on his social media platform, expressing appreciation to individuals, colleagues, fans and other well-wishers who supported Kareem during her illness.
According to the TAMPAN official, several people contributed financially, offered prayers, encouragement and other forms of assistance in an effort to help the actress overcome the illness.
Despite the support she received, however, Kareem eventually succumbed to the disease.
Ajasa said the Association remained grateful to everyone who stood by the actress and her family during the difficult period, noting that the contributions and sacrifices made by supporters were deeply appreciated.
He described Kareem’s death as a painful loss and prayed for God to grant her eternal rest while giving her family, colleagues and loved ones the strength to cope with the bereavement.
The Actress’ death has generated an outpouring of grief among members of the Yoruba movie industry, with colleagues and admirers mourning the loss of another talent to cancer.
Actress had appealed for help
Kareem’s death has attracted particular attention because of her earlier public appeal for assistance.
About four months before her death, the actress reportedly sought financial support from Nigerians to help offset the cost of her treatment.

The Association acknowledged the financial contributions, prayers and encouragement provided by well-wishers, while also expressing sadness that the actress eventually lost her battle.
Ajasa urged the actress’ family, colleagues and loved ones to find strength during the difficult period and accept the loss as the will of God.
The Association also prayed for Kareem’s peaceful repose.
Another loss for Yoruba Nollywood
Kareem’s death comes at a particularly difficult time for the Yoruba section of Nollywood, which is still mourning the recent death of Veteran Actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
Ogogo died about eight days before Kareem following a battle with stage-four cancer, according to reports.
The back-to-back deaths have deepened concerns and sorrow within the Yoruba movie community, with colleagues and fans mourning the loss of established and emerging talents.
Kareem was recognised for her participation in Yoruba-language productions and her contribution to the Nigerian movie industry.
