22-Year-Old Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Raping His Own Mother
A 22-year-old man in South Africa has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment after raping his biological mother while she was asleep at their home in Carnarvon, Northern Cape.
The shocking incident, which occurred in November 2025, came to light after the victim woke up during the assault and discovered that her own son was sexually assaulting her.
The Carnarvon Regional Court handed down the sentence after the accused eventually pleaded guilty to the rape charge, following the presentation of evidence by the prosecution, including DNA results that linked him to the offence.
Global Mirror News gathered that the incident occurred on November 23, 2025, after the 42-year-old victim and her life partner had been drinking alcohol before falling asleep at their home.
The accused had reportedly also been drinking at a friend’s house before returning home.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused arrived at the house and found his mother and her partner asleep.
He allegedly undressed his mother and sexually penetrated her without her consent while she was sleeping.
The woman subsequently woke up during the assault and was shocked to discover her son on top of her.
When she confronted him about his actions, the accused reportedly fled the house.
The victim later informed her life partner about what had happened, prompting them to report the matter to the Police.
DNA evidence links accused to offence
Following his arrest, the 22-year-old initially denied the allegations in a written statement.
However, investigators obtained DNA evidence which later linked him to the sexual assault.
NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the forensic evidence, together with the victim’s testimony, became central to the prosecution’s case.
“Faced with the compelling evidence presented by the State, including the complainant’s testimony and the DNA results, the accused ultimately pleaded guilty to the charge of rape,” Senokoatsane said.
His guilty plea meant that the court could proceed to consider the appropriate punishment after taking into account the seriousness of the offence, the evidence presented and the impact on the victim.
Mother says she feels betrayed by son
In a victim-impact statement presented before the court, the woman described the profound emotional consequences of the assault.
She told the court that she had raised the accused as a single mother, making the circumstances surrounding the offence particularly painful and devastating for her.
The woman said she felt “deeply hurt and betrayed” by her son’s actions.
She further explained that the trauma from the incident has continued to affect her life.
According to her statement, she continues to receive counselling as she struggles to cope with the psychological consequences of the assault.
She also reportedly experiences ongoing trauma, including difficulty sleeping.
The victim’s statement provided the court with an account of the long-term emotional damage caused by the offence and the impact of sexual violence on survivors.
Court considers guilty plea but imposes lengthy sentence
Although the court considered the accused’s guilty plea as a mitigating factor, it determined that the seriousness of the offence warranted a lengthy prison sentence.
The Carnarvon Regional Court subsequently sentenced the 22-year-old to 20 years’ direct imprisonment.
The court also ordered that his details be entered into South Africa’s National Register for Sex Offenders.
The register is intended to keep records of individuals convicted of relevant sexual offences and is part of measures aimed at protecting the public from sexual offenders.
