UNILAG Under Fire as Singer Fola’s Project Defence Outfit Sparks Online Debate
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has found itself at the centre of a heated social media controversy after Nigerian Afrobeats and Afro-R&B singer Folarin Odunlami, popularly known as Fola, appeared at his final-year project defence in an outfit that many Nigerians described as inappropriate for an academic exercise.
Global Mirror News gathered that the fast-rising artiste reportedly defended his final-year project in the Department of Economics Education, Faculty of Education, before photos and videos of his appearance went viral across social media platforms.
The singer was seen arriving on campus in a Cadillac Escalade while dressed in baggy trousers, a shirt, a scarf and fashion accessories, a style that immediately divided public opinion and ignited conversations over dress codes in Nigerian universities.
Many social media users questioned whether the Institution had relaxed its standards because of Fola’s celebrity status. Some alleged that regular students had previously been denied access to project defence sessions for failing to comply with prescribed corporate dressing requirements, while the singer was allegedly allowed to proceed without objection.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the University that Fola violated any dress code or that he received preferential treatment.
Reacting to the development, an X user identified as @Nurse__lyon said although he admired the singer, academic exercises deserved a level of respect that should be reflected in one’s appearance.
According to him, dressing appropriately for a project defence would not have diminished the singer’s personality, adding that the incident raised concerns about discipline within higher institutions.
Another user, @ithought_iwas2, recounted his own experience, claiming he was once barred from defending his project despite wearing a shirt, tie and trousers because he had no blazer. He said he was only allowed into the venue after borrowing one from another student.
Similarly, @Inspector_khay1 argued that wealth and celebrity status should never become an excuse for ignoring institutional decorum.
“There is a time and place for everything,” the user wrote, insisting that a corporate outfit would have been more appropriate for the occasion.
Also joining the conversation, @iamnotfredrick criticised both the singer and the university, alleging that the lecturers should have enforced whatever dress code was applicable to all students.
Another user, @Inviiin, questioned why any student should enjoy preferential treatment during an important academic exercise if such privileges were unavailable to others.
Echoing similar concerns, @IbimBoyle wondered whether Fola was exempt from university regulations after allegedly appearing in a crop top, chains and a head tie while other students reportedly faced sanctions over less significant dress code issues.
Meanwhile, @Thepentane_ argued that such an appearance would likely not have been tolerated in some Nigerian universities, particularly the University of Ibadan.
Despite the criticism, several social media users defended both the singer and the institution.
One user, @Damilaredeicon, maintained that corporate dressing is not a compulsory requirement in many Nigerian universities, especially for non-professional courses, noting that UNILAG may not strictly enforce such a policy.
Some of Fola’s classmates also posted photographs and videos celebrating with him after the project defence, suggesting the exercise was successfully completed without any disruption.
One of the posts claimed the singer travelled from Canada specifically to participate in the defence, while another shared a group photograph taken immediately after the academic exercise.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Fola nor the University of Lagos had released an official statement addressing the controversy.
