Two Babies Abandoned: Police Rescue Newborns, Launch Search for Mothers
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies found in separate locations in Kurudu and Gwagwalada, Abuja, and appealed to the public for information that could help trace their mothers and other relatives.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, who said the two incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Global Mirror News gathered that the first case was reported in Kurudu after a resident identified as Mr Innocent heard the cry of a baby at about 5:30 p.m. around Obodo Street.
According to the Police, Innocent went to investigate and discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.
Police operatives from the Kurudu Division, working with personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, were immediately mobilised to the location and rescued the child.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment, where he was reportedly found to be in stable condition. After the necessary documentation, the child was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care and protection.
In a separate incident later that day, another resident of Gwagwalada, identified as Mr Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate at about 9:40 p.m.
The Police said Ibrahim, with the assistance of other concerned members of the community, rescued the baby girl and reported the discovery at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.
Personnel of the JWC Department subsequently took the child to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and necessary care, pending her handover to the Social Welfare Development authorities.
The FCT Police Command said investigations were ongoing into both incidents to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the babies and identify their mothers and other family members.
The Command appealed to residents and other members of the public who may have information capable of assisting investigators in tracing the mothers or relatives of either child to report to the nearest Police station.
