Tanzania Vice President Resigns, Says President Hassan Wants a New Deputy
Tanzania’s Vice President, Emmanuel Nchimbi, has resigned from office and announced his retirement from active politics, less than a year after he assumed the Country’s second-highest political position.
Nchimbi announced his decision on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, saying he had become convinced that President Samia Suluhu Hassan wanted a different person to serve as her deputy.
In his resignation letter to President Hassan, Nchimbi recalled a commitment he made in August 2025, when he assured the President that he would willingly step aside if she ever decided she wanted another Vice President.
According to him, he had now become convinced “beyond doubt” that the president desired a change in the Vice-Presidential position.
Nchimbi said his decision was therefore intended to honour the commitment he made to the president while also bringing his political career to an end.
Hassan accepts resignation
President Hassan has accepted Nchimbi’s resignation, according to a statement issued by a Government spokesperson on Tuesday.
The Government said Nchimbi will formally leave office on September 4, having served as Vice President since November 2025.
The spokesperson added that constitutional procedures would commence to select and appoint a new Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Before becoming Vice President, Nchimbi served as Secretary-General of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), one of the most influential political positions within Tanzania’s governing party.
Constitutional reform remarks sparked controversy
Nchimbi had also attracted criticism from some members of the ruling party following comments he made in July during an event organised by a rights group in Dar es Salaam.
At the event, he expressed support for Tanzanians pushing for a new constitution, arguing that the Country needed a constitutional framework that would promote not only economic and material development but also human dignity.
He said Tanzania needed a constitution capable of advancing “the development of dignity and the human worth” of every person living in the Country.
The remarks reportedly generated concerns within sections of the ruling party, with some party members questioning whether such comments were appropriate for a Senior Government official.
Nchimbi’s subsequent resignation has now added another significant development to Tanzania’s political landscape.
Election controversy
President Samia Suluhu Hassan won Tanzania’s 2025 presidential election with nearly 98 per cent of the vote. However, the election was followed by serious controversy, including deadly unrest and concerns over the exclusion of prominent opposition figures from the electoral contest.
A Government-appointed inquiry panel later reported that at least 518 people were killed during the unrest that followed the election.
The violence and the wider political dispute have intensified calls for constitutional and electoral reforms in the East African Nation.
For President Hassan, the resignation means she will now have to work with Tanzania’s constitutional authorities and ruling establishment to select a new Deputy at a time when questions about political reforms, democratic participation and National stability remain prominent.
