Saudi Arabia opens more doors for Nigerian pilgrims as 2027 Hajj quota rises to 60,000

Thousands of Nigerian Muslims who had feared missing the opportunity to perform the 2027 Hajj may now have renewed hope, following Saudi Arabia’s approval of an additional 10,000 pilgrimage slots for Nigeria.

The new allocation has increased Nigeria’s total quota for the 2027 Hajj from 50,000 to 60,000 pilgrims, according to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

Global Mirror News reports that the development followed sustained high-level diplomatic engagements between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after an earlier request for an increase was rejected.

The latest decision represents a significant turnaround for intending pilgrims, particularly those who had been left uncertain after Saudi authorities initially maintained Nigeria’s quota at 50,000.

NAHCON’s Head of Information and Publications Division, Shafii Mohammed, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.

According to the Commission, 7,500 of the additional 10,000 slots have been allocated to State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Agencies and Commissions, while the remaining 2,500 slots have been assigned to seven lead licensed Hajj tour operator companies.

The Commission said the additional allocation expands Nigeria’s existing 50,000-slot quota and brings the overall national allocation for the 2027 pilgrimage to 60,000 pilgrims.

The development is particularly significant because NAHCON had announced on September 17 that Saudi Arabia had declined Nigeria’s earlier request for an upward review of the quota.

At the time, Saudi authorities cited capacity limitations, structural constraints at the holy sites and the Kingdom’s policy of maintaining approved country quotas under its existing operational framework.

The earlier 50,000 allocation comprised 35,000 slots for government pilgrims and 15,000 for licensed private tour operators.

The rejection had raised concerns among state pilgrims’ welfare boards, tour operators and intending pilgrims, especially as demand for Hajj places continued to rise.

However, renewed diplomatic efforts between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia subsequently produced a different outcome.

NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the Saudi Arabian authorities for the additional allocation.

Yusuf described the development as a significant gesture of goodwill towards Nigeria and its pilgrims, while reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that the new slots are administered transparently.

He also assured that the allocation would be managed in accordance with applicable Nigerian and Saudi Arabian regulations and operational requirements.

Global Mirror News gathered that the additional slots could provide an opportunity for more Nigerians who had been unable to secure places under the original quota to participate in the 2027 pilgrimage.

The increase is also expected to ease pressure on state pilgrims’ welfare agencies and licensed tour operators that had been seeking more spaces for prospective pilgrims.

The latest development comes as preparations for the 2027 Hajj continue, with NAHCON and other stakeholders expected to make necessary adjustments to registration, documentation, biometric processing and other operational arrangements to accommodate the additional pilgrims.

NAHCON further reaffirmed its commitment to making Hajj accessible to Nigerians while maintaining standards of service delivery, accountability and regulatory compliance.

For many intending pilgrims and their families, the increase from 50,000 to 60,000 represents more than a change in figures. It could mean another opportunity to fulfil a long-held spiritual aspiration that had appeared out of reach only weeks ago.

The additional allocation also highlights the importance of continued coordination between Nigeria’s Hajj authorities and their Saudi counterparts as both countries prepare for the 2027 pilgrimage.

With the revised quota now confirmed, attention is expected to shift to how the additional 10,000 slots will be distributed and how quickly eligible intending pilgrims will be processed under the new arrangement.

Global Mirror News will continue to monitor developments surrounding the 2027 Hajj arrangements and bring updates to intending pilgrims and the public.
