Ogun Tragedy: 38-Year-Old Graduate Dies After Alleged Beating Over Child’s Hug
Family Demands Justice as Police Arrest 43-Year-Old Neighbour
A simple moment of affection between a 38-year-old University graduate and a little child has ended in a heartbreaking tragedy in Mowe-Ofada, Ogun State, leaving a family mourning a son who, according to his relatives, had just begun making plans for marriage, work and a better future.
The deceased, identified as Mike Oje, a graduate of Guidance and Counselling, was reportedly beaten following an argument over his interaction with his neighbour’s three-year-old child.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in the Mowe area of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, has since resulted in the arrest of a 43-year-old neighbour, Edebiri Temitope, by the Ogun State Police Command.
According to the Police, Oje had hugged and played with the three-year-old child, an action that allegedly angered the child’s father, who reportedly described the interaction as “rough play”.
The Police said the situation escalated after the father allegedly picked up a bamboo stick and repeatedly struck Oje until he collapsed and died.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident and disclosed that Temitope, who was initially reported to have fled with his family, had been arrested.
The suspect was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
But behind the Police statement is a grieving family struggling to understand how a young man who, according to his relatives, had no known quarrel with the suspect could lose his life over what was described as playing with a child.
‘Mike Was Only Playing With The Child’
A relative of the deceased, identified as Peter Adum, said Mike had just returned from work when the little child approached him.
According to Adum, the child and Mike were familiar with each other and would usually play together.
He alleged that the child hugged Mike when he returned from work, after which Mike hugged the child back and playfully lifted him before going into his room.
The relative said Mike later came out after the neighbour confronted him over the manner in which he allegedly played with the child.
According to the family’s account, Mike explained that he had only hugged and lifted the child while playing with him.
The confrontation allegedly escalated, with the neighbour reportedly slapping Mike before picking up a bamboo stick and hitting him several times.
The family alleged that Mike was struck around the left side of his chest before he fell and died.
The details remain subject to Police investigation and the outcome of forensic procedures.
A Family’s Shock
For Mike’s relatives, the news was difficult to comprehend.
Adum said the family was informed that Mike had been killed and travelled to the location, arriving later to find him dead.
He said the incident reportedly occurred around 2pm, while the family arrived at about 4pm.
According to the relative, Mike’s body was subsequently taken to a mortuary after the family contacted the authorities.
The family has also reportedly obtained an autopsy form, with the autopsy expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Suspect Initially Fled
Police said the suspect initially fled the area with his family after the incident.
A subsequent Police update, however, confirmed that Temitope had been arrested.
The command said the 43-year-old was transferred to the State CID in Eleweran for further investigation.
The family’s account also stated that the suspect eventually turned up through a lawyer, after reportedly leaving the area with his children.

Mike Had Just Graduated
Global Mirror News gathered that Mike was not only a University graduate but had reportedly just completed his studies in Guidance and Counselling.
His relatives described him as jovial and friendly, saying he had plans for the future and was looking forward to beginning another chapter of his life.
According to his cousin, Mike was looking forward to participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme after completing his University education.
He was also reportedly working while planning to establish himself financially.
He Was Planning His Wedding
Perhaps one of the most painful aspects of the tragedy is that Mike was reportedly preparing for marriage.
His relative said Mike had a girlfriend whom he intended to marry and had already rented a room-and-parlour self-contained apartment in Ikorodu, Lagos State, where he planned to settle after marriage.
He was also reportedly planning to raise money to establish a small business.
His relatives said he had shared several of these plans with them shortly before his death.
‘We Never Knew That Would Be The Last Time’
According to Adum, Mike spent the night of August 25 with two of his brothers and other family members.
They reportedly discussed their plans for the future, including his marriage and other things he hoped to accomplish before the end of the year.
They reportedly parted ways around 11pm or midnight.
The following day was supposed to be another ordinary day.
But it became the day Mike reportedly lost his life.
The family member said they had even advised Mike not to go to work that day because they planned to attend a friend’s naming ceremony together.
Nobody reportedly imagined that their previous meeting would be their last.
His Mother Keeps Asking For Her Son
The emotional impact of the tragedy has reportedly extended beyond the immediate circumstances of Mike’s death.
His father is said to be late, while his mother is still alive.
According to the family, she has been deeply affected by the death and repeatedly asks to see her son.
The family said Mike’s body could not immediately be taken home because of the procedures required, including the autopsy.
One of his brothers was also reportedly so affected by the news that he required medical attention, with the family saying they spent more than ₦1.5 million on his treatment after his blood pressure reportedly rose sharply following the shock.
Family Wants Justice
The family has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mike’s death.
They said they have cooperated with the police, taken his body to the mortuary and obtained the necessary documents for the autopsy.
Their demand, according to the relative, is that the circumstances surrounding the death should be properly established and that anyone found responsible should face the law.
The family said it was particularly painful because Mike had dreams for his future and had reportedly just completed his university education.
Police Investigation Continues
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the suspect is now in custody and has been transferred to the State CID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The arrest marks a significant development from the initial reports, which stated that the suspect had fled the area.
As of the latest police update, the case remains under investigation, and there has been no reported court determination of the allegations against Temitope.
For Mike Oje’s family, however, the pain is already permanent.
A young graduate who reportedly dreamed of completing his NYSC, getting married, establishing himself and supporting his family is now being mourned by the people who only days earlier were discussing his future with him.
What began, according to the reports, as an encounter involving a child has ended with a family preparing to bury a 38-year-old man whose life was still unfolding.
