The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, on Tuesday urged media practitioners in the state to return to the core tenets of journalism by prioritizing accuracy, objective reporting, and developmental news in their day-to-day operations.
CP Ojajuni made this call during a courtesy visit by the newly elected executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, to the Police Command, Headquarters in Abeokuta.
He emphasized that sticking to fundamental journalism ethics remains vital for maintaining peace, public order, and democratic accountability.
Addressing the leadership of the Chapel, the Police Commissioner noted that the rapid spread of unverified information on digital platforms makes professional journalism more critical than ever.
He therefore urged media professionals to guard against sensationalism and fake news, which he warned could easily undermine security efforts and inflame societal tensions.
Ojajuni assured the journalists of the command’s unwavering support and readiness to foster a robust working relationship with the press.
He highlighted the importance of synergy between security agencies and the media, describing journalists as essential partners in combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Ogun State.
Earlier in her remarks, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Yetunde Fatungase commended the Police Command for its ongoing efforts to curb crime in the state.
She reaffirmed the Chapel’s commitment to balanced, accurate, and responsible journalism, assuring the Commissioner that journalists in Ogun State will continue to adhere to the highest professional standards.
“We are here to strengthen the existing relationship between the media and the police, recognising that both institutions play critical roles in promoting peace, security and national development.
“While the police work tirelessly to protect lives and property, the media remains committed to informing the public accurately, responsibly and professionally”, she said
