Nigerian Army Probes Captain Over Alleged Abuse, Pregnancy of Wife’s 13-Year-Old Sister
The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, who is currently serving at the Headquarters of 3 Division, Jos.
The allegation concerns a 13-year-old girl who is reportedly deaf and non-speaking and who was allegedly living under the care of Captain Essien’s family in Taraba State.
The officer has been accused of sexually abusing the minor, allegedly impregnating her and fathering a child with her.
SaharaReporters had reported that the victim is the younger step-sister of Captain Essien’s wife, Blessing Essien.
Reacting to the report, the Nigerian Army, in a statement released on Saturday, September 12, 2026, said it had taken note of the allegations and had begun appropriate investigative steps.
The Army said it takes all allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with the utmost seriousness.
According to the Military, the investigation is aimed at establishing the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
The Army, however, cautioned that since the allegation is still under investigation, it would be inappropriate to make definitive statements regarding the culpability of any individual at this stage.
The Military also disclosed that it was aware that relevant civil authorities were looking into the matter.
It assured that the Nigerian Army would cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the allegation is thoroughly and transparently investigated in accordance with extant laws and regulations.
The development has drawn attention to the need for proper protection of children and vulnerable persons, particularly where allegations of abuse arise within a family or care-giving environment.
