Messi Retires From Argentina Duty, Says ‘I Have Nothing More to Give’

Argentina football icon, Lionel Messi, has announced his retirement from International football, bringing an emotional end to a remarkable 20-year career with the National team.

The 39-year-old Argentina captain disclosed his decision in an emotional statement shared on his Instagram on Monday, August 31, saying he had reached the conclusion after extensive reflection following the 2026 World Cup final.

Messi revealed that although he had initially made up his mind shortly after the final, the recent death of his father had strengthened his conviction that it was time to step away from International football.

“After all this time since the final, and after thinking about it a lot, I want to tell everyone that I’m retiring from the national team,” Messi said.

The legendary forward acknowledged that walking away from the Argentina shirt was an extremely painful decision, but maintained that he believed it was the appropriate moment to close that chapter of his career.

“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep inside, but I understand that this is the right moment,” he said.

According to Messi, his commitment to Argentina had never been limited to the period in which the team enjoyed its greatest successes. He stressed that he had consistently given everything for the National colours, including during years when major International trophies remained elusive.

“I swear I always gave everything, not only in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too,” the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star said.

“I always fought and gave everything for this shirt, to bring you happiness and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.”

Messi said he was conscious that his playing career was entering its final stages and that several chapters of his football journey were gradually coming to an end.

“There isn’t much time left, and different chapters are coming to an end. This is one that hurts me a lot,” he said.

“I love, I loved, and I will always love being part of the national team. I gave everything I had, and I don’t have anything more to give.”

Messi backs Argentina’s younger generation

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also pointed to the emergence of a new generation of talented Argentine footballers, saying they deserved opportunities to establish themselves in the National team.

“Also, there are great young players coming through who deserve to be here,” Messi added.

The Argentine superstar concluded his emotional message by thanking God for making him Argentine and signing off with the famous phrase, “Vamos Argentina!”

Death of his father strengthened decision

Messi further disclosed that he had actually written the retirement statement on July 21, two days after the final, indicating that the decision had been weighing heavily on him for some time.

However, he said the death of his father subsequently reinforced his belief that retiring from international football was the right decision.

“Today, after what happened with my dad, I’m even more convinced of this decision than before,” Messi added.
