Groom Beaten to Death Weeks Before Wedding: Four Arrested Over Lagos Mob Killing
A man identified as Basit Kolade, who recently returned to Nigeria ahead of his wedding later this month, has reportedly been beaten to death by a mob in Lagos Island, with four suspects now arrested in connection with the incident.
Global Mirror News gathered that the tragic incident occurred on September 2, 2026, around Freeman Street, Lagos Island, after an altercation reportedly followed a road accident involving Basit’s black Lexus Jeep and a motorcycle.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, Basit was travelling with his woman, identified simply as Ayanda, from Ebute Metta towards Lagos Island when a motorcycle allegedly collided with the rear of their vehicle.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, who confirmed the incident, said the motorcycle rider was confronted by Basit after the collision, with the deceased reportedly demanding an explanation for what had happened.
Adebisi said the situation allegedly escalated when Basit reversed the vehicle and struck the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall.
She explained that following the development, a group of boys allegedly emerged from the area and attacked Basit with dangerous weapons.
While the attack was ongoing, Ayanda was reportedly rescued by some women in the area.
Basit was subsequently rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where medical personnel attended to him. However, he was later confirmed dead.
The incident has generated concerns over the dangers of mob action and jungle justice, particularly where an initial dispute or road accident is allowed to escalate into violence.
The Police spokesperson confirmed that four suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack continue.
The Lagos State Police Command strongly condemned the incident and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
The Command stressed that no individual or group has the right to administer punishment outside the legal system, adding that anyone found culpable in the attack would be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
Basit’s death is particularly tragic as, according to reports, he had only recently returned to Nigeria in preparation for his wedding scheduled for later in September 2026.
The case has once again drawn attention to the need for members of the public to exercise restraint during road disputes and other disagreements, and to allow the police and other lawful authorities to handle allegations of wrongdoing.
Police authorities said those who participated in the alleged mob action would face the full weight of the law if found culpable.
