Family Wiped Out in Landslide as Water Tank Crushes Home, Four Die
A devastating tragedy has struck Nenwenta Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, where four members of the same family were reportedly crushed to death after a landslide caused an elevated water tank to collapse on their home.
The victims were said to be a man, his wife, his aged mother and one of their children.
The tragedy occurred at the weekend after torrential rainfall reportedly triggered a landslide, washing away the soil around the base of the elevated water tank.
With little warning, the tank reportedly toppled onto the family’s building, flattening the structure and trapping everyone inside.
For the community, the scene quickly turned from an ordinary rainy weekend into one of grief and helplessness, as residents gathered around the wreckage, hoping against hope that someone could still be found alive.
Emergency workers searching through the rubble eventually rescued a four-year-old child alive, offering a heartbreaking reminder that there had been life beneath the ruins even as four family members were lost.
A video of the incident circulated online on Monday, September 21, showing residents gathered around the collapsed building, with cries and wailing heard as rescue workers continued their search.
The Enugu State House of Assembly subsequently confirmed that four people died in the building collapse.
Raising a motion of urgent public importance, the lawmaker representing Awgu South State Constituency described the incident as devastating and expressed concern over the difficulty emergency workers faced in reaching the affected area.
He said the road linking Ugwueme and Nenwenta was inaccessible, adding that the situation may have affected rescue efforts and possibly reduced the chances of saving those trapped beneath the rubble.
The lawmaker therefore urged relevant government Agencies to urgently intervene and restore access to the affected communities.
Other lawmakers expressed sympathy with the bereaved family and community and agreed to communicate with the appropriate authorities over the urgent need for intervention.
