HIV Dispute Turns Deadly as Man Allegedly Kills Girlfriend, Hides Body in Toilet
A relationship dispute over allegations of who infected the other with HIV has reportedly ended in tragedy in Enugu State, after a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, was arrested over the alleged killing of his girlfriend identified as Chinyere.
The incident occurred in the Awkunanaw area of Enugu, where the victim’s decomposing remains were allegedly discovered inside the toilet of the suspect’s apartment, days after her death.
The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Emmanuel, who was reportedly rescued from an angry mob before being taken into police custody.
According to the Police, operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division arrested the suspect at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, after receiving information that he had allegedly killed his girlfriend.
Preliminary findings indicate that the alleged killing occurred on September 19 following an argument between the suspect and the deceased.
Global Mirror News gathered that the disagreement reportedly centred on allegations concerning who infected whom with Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to hitting the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument.
The blow reportedly resulted in her death.
Rather than immediately reporting the incident, the suspect allegedly wrapped the victim’s remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of his apartment before locking the room.
However, the situation was reportedly uncovered after neighbours noticed an offensive odour coming from the apartment.
The worsening smell reportedly raised suspicion among residents, who eventually forced their way into the apartment and allegedly discovered the decomposing remains.
The angry neighbours reportedly apprehended the suspect before Police operatives arrived and rescued him from the mob.
Global Mirror News reports that the victim’s remains were subsequently evacuated by the Police and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Police also said efforts were ongoing to identify and notify the deceased woman’s relatives as investigation continues.
The tragic incident has reportedly left residents shocked, particularly over the alleged circumstances surrounding the death and the subsequent concealment of the body.
The Police have not disclosed the result of any medical examination concerning the HIV allegations, and the claims made during the suspect’s preliminary interrogation remain subject to investigation.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
The Police Boss further directed investigators to establish the facts of the case and ensure that the suspect is brought before a court upon completion of the investigation.
The case remains under investigation.
