Council of Legal Education Approves 122 Universities to Offer Law in Nigeria, Warns Students Against Unaccredited Programmes

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released an updated list of 122 Universities approved to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria, warning prospective students and parents to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrolling.

The development, contained in a public notice issued by the Council on Monday and dated August 14, 2026, is aimed at protecting students from enrolling in unapproved Law programmes that could ultimately jeopardise their professional aspirations.

Global Mirror News gathered that the Council stressed that only universities accredited by the CLE are legally authorised to admit students into the LL.B programme in Nigeria.

According to the Council, students who obtain admission to study Law in institutions without the required accreditation will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School, a critical stage for anyone seeking to qualify for legal practice in Nigeria.

The Council warned universities against admitting students into Law programmes without its approval, noting that such institutions would be acting contrary to the laws and regulations governing legal education in the country and could face sanctions.

In the notice signed by Aderonke O. Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, the CLE urged prospective students, parents, guardians and other stakeholders to rely on its approved list when making decisions concerning legal education.

The Council stated that the publication was released “for the guidance of the public” and would be reviewed and updated whenever necessary in accordance with its statutory responsibility to regulate legal education in Nigeria.

Some approved universities placed under admission moratorium

Although the Council’s list contains 122 approved Universities, Global Mirror News gathered that approval does not necessarily mean every Institution on the list is currently free to admit fresh students into Law.

Some Universities have been placed under moratorium on admission, meaning they are temporarily prohibited from admitting new students into their LL.B programmes during the periods specified by the Council.

For instance, Baze University, Abuja, is listed under a three-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 academic sessions.

Lead City University, Ibadan, is subject to a five-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2027/2028 sessions.

The Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, also has a two-year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 sessions.

The Council said the restrictions were approved by its governing body.

Council urges applicants to verify before paying fees

The latest announcement is particularly significant for students seeking admission into Law for the 2026/2027 academic session, as enrolling in an unaccredited programme could result in years of academic effort without access to the Nigerian Law School.

Global Mirror News therefore advises prospective Law students and their sponsors to confirm the current accreditation and admission status of any university before accepting an offer, paying school fees or beginning an LL.B programme.

The Council’s warning also underscores the importance of distinguishing between a university appearing on an approved list and a university being permitted to admit new Law students in a particular academic session, especially where a moratorium has been imposed.

Prospective students are consequently encouraged to consult the latest information from the Council of Legal Education before making final admission decisions.

Global Mirror News will continue to monitor developments concerning University accreditation, legal education and admission regulations in Nigeria.
