Fresh Graduate Confirmed Dead as Second Body Recovered from Collapsed Anambra Hostel

A fresh graduate of the Department of Food Science and Technology at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, has been identified among the victims of the tragic collapse of the Elite 5-Star Hostel in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Global Mirror News gathered that the three-storey hostel, which reportedly contained about 60 rooms, collapsed on the night of Sunday, July 26, 2026, trapping several occupants beneath the rubble.

Global Mirror News gathered that two bodies a male and a female have so far been recovered by rescue teams. The female victim was identified as Vivian Chinedum, a baker and a recent graduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

Friends of the deceased disclosed that Vivian moved into the hostel in March 2026, unaware of any structural concerns surrounding the building.

Survivors narrated that there were visible warning signs shortly before the building gave way. One of the occupants, Grace Nweke, said that at about 10 p.m. on the night of the incident, a food vendor residing in the hostel alerted tenants through their WhatsApp group that cracks had begun appearing on the building’s walls.

Grace explained that while some residents were still trying to understand the gravity of the warning, loud cracking sounds echoed through the building, prompting occupants to flee for safety.

She recalled that she had relocated to the hostel in January 2026 and had never suspected that the structure was unsafe. According to her, residents later discovered that previous occupants had allegedly been instructed to vacate the building because it had been declared structurally defective.

Despite the reported warning, the building’s caretaker allegedly rented out the apartments to unsuspecting students, exposing them to the fatal danger.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Deputy Director of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Ndidi Omega, described the incident as both unfortunate and preventable.

She stressed the importance of ensuring that buildings identified as unsafe or marked for demolition are completely vacated and secured against further occupation to prevent avoidable loss of lives.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of privately owned student hostels in communities surrounding tertiary institutions, with Presidents and stakeholders calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations and regular structural integrity assessments.
